Celebrate the Century – 1940’s Issued in 1999 The fifth set in the Celebrate the Century series, prepared for the Millennium celebration, honors people & events prominent in the decade 1940-49 of the 20th century. There were 10 sheets, one for each decade, with 15 stamps on each sheet for a total of 150 different stamps. Each stamp only appeared once on each sheet. Citizen Kane, Orson Wells Considered the greatest film of all time, Citizen Kane was nominated for nine Academy Awards & won for best original screenplay. Orson Welles directed & starred in the drama based on a principal character based on the life of William Randolph Hearst. The newspaper magnate would not permit mention of the film in any of his newspapers. The film was heralded for its innovative cinematography, narrative, & music. Although an artistic & critical success, the film’s box-office receipts failed to cover its costs. Originally priced at $1, the toy was such a hit that the manufacturer had to move its operation, while beginning to offer spin-off toys based on the original design.
