Beautiful New Old Stock Fine Porcelain Ashtray. Mid Century Modern Decor or Collectible. Made in the 50’s in Taiwan. Heavy Gold Gilt Sides & Rim, with Handprinted Floral Design on exterior. Interior is handprinted with children playing/celebrating with lanterns that symbolize prosperity & happiness in Chinese folklore. See appraiser notes below with regards to this possibly depicting the Fish Lantern Festival. A truly beautiful NOS piece of art work. This is highly collectible, & would make a beautiful catch all type dish to old keys near an entry door, on office desk to hold clips & such, on a vanity to hold jewelry & rings, or anything else you might thing of …I put a couple of these next to my kitchen sink one holds an antique bottle with hand lotion & one with hand soap. The other holds a scrub daddy. They look amazing & are very unexpected. They also look wonderful in a display case or hung on a wall. & of course they are a must have for any collector of Tobacciana. Rare & beautiful this piece is wonderful office or home decor & a much appreciated & cherished gift. Information from the professional appraiser that appraised this piece The paper label reads “Made in Taiwan” The blue mark at the bottom says that they are hand-painted, which is partly accurate because most of these are made using a “transferware” technique (decal, transparency) & then enhanced with artistic brush strokes. Made around the 1950s The children are celebrating with lanterns that symbolize prosperity & happiness in Chinese folklore. Furthermore, one of the children is holding a Fish Lantern that seems to indicate that it may refer to the Fish Lantern Festival, held on the 13th & 14th day of the lunar new year in certain regions where fishing is a major occupation of the inhabitants the characters 光華藝品 (pronounced Guanghua Yipin) means Guanghua Arts & Crafts Co.,Ltd. “Guanghua” in Chinese means “Magnificent object of art”, in this case is part of the name of this company.
