Cypress answers to no one; not Spruce or Pine or Douglas fir or any of the other conifers she rides with. She is her own scent, masculine, feminine & somewhere all the way in between. She smells like an acrid Elemi & a little of Pine without the balsamic note. & true to Cypress, she’s a little sour & dry in a lemon kind a way. I don’t hold one fascinating note against her, not with her complexity & value she has on skin. This is a hydrosol I really wanted to distill because it is so beneficial for razor bumps, cuts & it smells so good on fresh shaved skin. It also gives me the opportunity to collect the cones for future incense making when out foraging for the trees. I’ve mixed cypress with rose hydrosol as its own decadent hydration for my skin & it almost captures the profile of rugosa rose; flowers, leaves & all. Cypress is a remarkable scent profile that has been hard to quit. “The Next Aromatherapy” (Suzanne Catty) recommends blending cypress with juniper hydrosol (another one I produce) for cleansing & detoxifying. Juniper is a kidney supportive so it stands that the combination of both would be helpful in stimulating the liver & kidneys. She also notes Cypress can be helpful as a topical for arthritis & edema.
